The 10th anniversary edition featuring a new afterword, this is the untold story of Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett. Billy the Kid, aka Henry McCarty, Henry Antrim and William Bonney, was a horse thief, cattle rustler, charismatic rogue and cold-blooded killer. A superb shot, the Kid gunned down four men single-handedly and five others with the help of cronies. Two of his victims were Lincoln County, New Mexico, deputies killed during the Kid's brazen daylight escape from the courthouse jail on 28th April 1881. For the new sheriff, Pat Garrett, an acquaintance of Billy's, the chase was on. This fact-packed shoot-'em-up tale recreates the thrilling manhunt for the Wild West's most iconic outlaw and the author digs beneath the myth to take a fresh look at these two men and their epic ride to immortality. Unfazed, Billy spoke up: 'Mrs Lesnett, they can't hang me if I'm not there, can they?' Chapters include Outlaws and Lawmen, Facing Death Boldly, and Both Hero and Villain. 330pp, illustrated paperback.

PALACES OF THE REVOLUTION

Book number: 91939 Product format: Hardback Author: SIMON THURLEY

Bibliophile price £7.00
Published price £25

A leading historian of English architecture, Simon Thurley was Chief Executive of English Heritage for 13 years and responsible for 420 sites and monuments including Stonehenge and has been director of the Museum of London and the Curator of Historic Royal Palaces. Life in the court of the House of Stuart has been shrouded in mystery. The first half of the century was overshadowed by the fall and execution of Charles I and the second half in the complete collapse of the House itself. Lost is the extraordinary contribution the Stuarts made to the fabric of sovereignty. When James I of England ascended the throne in 1603 he inherited an estate of dilapidated palaces, many barely renewed since the start of the reign of Henry VIII nearly 100 years before. The Stuarts would be in power for only 111 years, but in that short time they were to bring transformational change to the palaces and their contents, becoming the greatest builders and collectors of art of any Royal House. Every palace they built, painting they commissioned, or artwork they acquired was a direct reflection of the lives they led and the way they thought. We are taken from Royston and Newmarket where James I appropriated most of the town centre as a sort of rough-and-ready royal housing estate, to the steamy Turkish baths at Whitehall where Charles II seduced his mistresses. Hampton Court, Whitehall, Somerset House, Windsor Castle, Oatlands, St James's, Greenwich, Newmarket and Winchester, here are capital improvements, dignity and order, and of course the Civil War, republican residences, the court in exile, the Restoration and much domesticity and splendour in this celebration of the magnificence of sovereignty. It is in all a thrilling new history of the Stuart monarchy told through their palaces by one of the best architectural historians alive in the world, 'an impressive book - for its scholarship, for its easy didacticism.' - The Sunday Times. We also greatly admire in this heavyweight hardback how many colour plates, architectural drawings, woodcuts, maps and illustrations have been included. 543pp. Colour.

HOW TO MAKE THE WORLD ADD UP

Book number: 92074 Product format: Paperback Author: TIM HARFORD

In stock

Bibliophile price £6.00
Published price £9.99

2021 paperback edition sub-titled 'Ten Rules for Thinking Differently About Numbers.' Stephen Fry said 'We are supremely lucky to have the fabulously readable, lucid, witty and authoritative Tim Harford to remind us why facts, reason, numbers, clarity and truth matter, how beautiful they are and how crucial to our understanding of the natural world and human society.' If you aren't in love with stats before reading this book, you will be by this powerful and persuasive book by the well-respected economist from the Financial Times. This book was the winner of the Sunday Times Book of the Year 2020. Harford takes us deep into the world of disinformation and obfuscation, bad research and misplaced motivation to find those priceless jewels of data and analysis that make communicating with numbers so rewarding. We see statistics in the newspapers and social media and hear them in everyday conversation, and yet we doubt them more than ever. But numbers in the right hands have the power to change the world for the better. Good statistics are not a trick, although they are a kind of magic. Harford's characters range from the art forger who conned the Nazis to the stripper who fell in love with the most powerful congressman in Washington, to the famous data detectives such as John Maynard Keynes, Daniel Kahneman and Florence Nightingale. He reveals how we can evaluate the claims that surround us with confidence, curiosity and a healthy level of scepticism. Using ten simple rules for understanding numbers, plus one golden rule, this extraordinarily insightful book shows how if we keep our wits about us, thinking carefully about the way numbers are sourced and presented, we can look around us and see with crystal clarity how the world adds up. 340pp, paperback.

INSIDE PARKHURST: Stories of A Prison Officer

Book number: 92078 Product format: Paperback Author: DAVID BERRIDGE

Bibliophile price £5.00
Published price £7.99

Gangsters, psychopaths, terrorists, assaults, riots, cell fires, medical emergencies, understaffed wings, suicides, hooch, weapons - it's all in a week's work at Her Majesty's Prison Parkhurst. After 28 years working as a prison officer with 22 years at HMP Parkhurst, one of Britain's most high-security prisons, David Berridge has had to deal with it all. Thrown in at the deep end, David quickly had to work out how to deal with the most cunning and volatile of prisoners, and learn how to avoid their many scams. His book is a raw and uncompromising look at what really goes on behind the massive walls and menacing gates and his diaries will shock and entertain in equal measure, both horrifying and at times hilarious. Beware there is some fruity language as he works his way around bullying, the day they stopped a suicide attempt, crap diet, the scream he can still hear, a scrap on the exercise yard, getting truly screwed, drugs, and playing by the rules. Gives an explanation of prison slang, official terms and uniformed staff by rank. 286pp, paperback.

SHAKESPEARE MOTLEY: An Illustrated Assortment

Book number: 92105 Product format: Hardback Author: THAMES & HUDSON LTD

Bibliophile price £5.75

William Shakespeare the great Bard was not writing in isolation but drew on the domestic and the natural world as well as history, and the literary and folk cultures of his time. Specific references that were common knowledge in his time may be lost to us today and this book aims to restore some of those resonances for the reader, from the tools and techniques of the falconer to the healing properties of spiders' webs. With 225 archive illustrations like Gloucester's eyes being pulled out from King Lear in the chapter on Eyes and Eyesight, there are dozens of references from Macbeth, Hamlet and a 1612 text on the diseased eye which helped Shakespeare with his eye imagery in his plays and how characters failed to see, so powerfully explored in King Lear. Hands and hand gestures, school, the rose, here shown with contemporary botanical illustrations in beautiful colour, the quill with references to the Rape of Lucrece and Twelfth Night, to rings from Richard III 'Look how my ring encompasseth thy finger; even so thy breast encloseth my poor heart. Wear both of them, for both of them are thine.' As we learn history about jewellery popular in Tudor England with semiprecious and precious stones being worn by both men and women on every finger and sometimes the thumb. The themes introduce us to Tudor history at the time of Queen Elizabeth I, printing, the plague, the Mulberry Owl, gloves, cherubin, the bear, from the apothecary to witches and the X garter, a ribbon or piece of fabric worn around the leg which held up a stocking or a sock, there are beautiful bookplates like the Herball of Generall Hiftore of Plantes in this most delightful compendium with marble decorated endpapers. 160pp.
