One slip was all it took to rob Matt Hunter of the life he had so well mapped out. A fight, a friend in trouble and the dull crack of someone's skull on the concrete cost him four years in jail and a small sliver of his soul. Emerging an older and wiser person, he finds a job to be proud of and a beautiful girl who agrees to marry him, but now someone is following him, threatening everything he has worked so hard for. And Matt can't trust anyone, least of all those he loves. Elegant, pacy and with tons of tension, this is a dark and gripping thriller from the master. 439pp in reprint of the 2005 original, this is an electrifying New Jersey-based thriller which plays games with notions of innocence and guilt and has satisfyingly realistic descriptions.

ALLIES: Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin

Book number: 92372 Product format: Paperback Author: WINSTON GROOM

Bibliophile price £5.00

Churchill was in the political wilderness between the two World Wars, increasingly unpopular as he warned against appeasement of Hitler and the relentless militarisation of the Nazi empire. Roosevelt was a good-looking playboy whose wife Eleanor gave valuable support in his career when he became American President in the middle of the Great Depression. In Russia, Stalin was a ruthless operator who stepped into Lenin's shoes after World War I by eliminating his rival Trotsky and murdering millions of peasants who resisted land reforms, not to mention his own former colleagues. The three world leaders had little in common but in an extraordinary throw of the dice they co-operated to defeat Hitler. This highly readable account of the three men, their careers, their policies and their political triumvirate, is a page turning history of the biggest crisis of the 20th century. In June 1941 Hitler had failed to break British morale with the London blitz, and had concluded that the might of the British Navy, with more than a thousand warships and even greater reserves of warplanes, would quickly put paid to any attempted invasion. He therefore turned his attention to the east and in violation of a non-aggression pact with Stalin invaded the Soviet Union. Churchill had repeatedly warned Stalin that the Nazi Panzer divisions moving into Poland could mean only one thing, but Stalin had dismissed both the intelligence and 500 of his own Soviet army generals, leaving him with no option but to join the Allies when disaster struck. He also sent a posse of spies to the west to steal the secrets of nuclear weapons. 1941 saw the attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into the war. When the map of Europe was finally carved into three at Yalta, Churchill and Roosevelt had no illusions about the fate of the eastern bloc. 464pp, paperback, maps, black and white photos.

FISH FACE: Portraits

Book number: 92376 Product format: Hardback Author: DAVID DOUBILLET

In stock

Bibliophile price £3.50

With around 200 breathtaking close-ups of the world's most exotic, beautiful and even frankly ugly fish, scuba-diver and photographer David Doubilet has created one of the most stylish volumes in the Phaidon imprint. For colour it is hard to beat the multicoloured bands of the Stoplight Parrot Fish, the orange and turquoise Indonesian Beaked Leather Jacket, or Egypt's Red Sea Coral Grouper with its sharp white teeth offset by a rich red spotty face. Extraordinary in both shape and colouring is the Tomato Clown Fish photographed in Papua New Guinea, while the Spinyhead Blenny from Cuba looks startled by its own luminous weirdness. The close-up of a Stingray from Grand Cayman Island is both perfect in its expanse of whiteness and disturbing in its parody of human facial features. Ragged Tooth Sharks have the same eerie quality, with the sinister addition of the mesh of teeth revealed in their predatory mouths, while a Great White Shark has fewer but more effective teeth. Wild staring eyes are a feature of many fish including the Australian Morwong, the Yellow Damsel Fish, the Map Puffer Fish, or the South African Hotlips Triplefin, where the eyes glow at least as redly as the lips. Many fish have extraordinary camouflage such as the mottled Stone Fish of the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian Leafy Sea Dragon or the Bicolour Parrot Fish from the Red Sea. Around 350 unnumbered and gorgeous pages, rare softback.

ENCOUNTERS: A Photographic Journey

Book number: 92393 Product format: Hardback Author: LEVISON WOOD

In stock

Bibliophile price £12.00
Published price £30

This book's stunning photos are presented in four sections, each of which challenges the viewer to a greater awareness of human diversity and resilience. "Frontiers" represents the isolated, remote and wild places "where people and nature co-exist and collide"; "Conflict" explores areas scarred by war; "Heritage" discovers how different cultures and ancient ways of life continue in spite of modernity; and "Community" seeks to understand how society is bonded together and humanity thrives. The author sees his photography, collected round the world over a period of ten years, as part of a wider method of storytelling, unfiltered and sometimes deliberately chaotic. Many of the images were captured at high altitudes, in inaccessible valleys, in jungles, deserts and war zones. Fisherwomen with baskets in Botswana seek to feed their families in precarious conditions, sharing the landscape with herds of elephants, while a beautiful sunset in Sudan captures a moment of serenity for the Mundari people who escaped with their cattle to the Sudd swamps on the Nile to get away from the war. High in the Pamir mountains of Afghanistan, a group of women and girls, frontier nomads in the Wakhan Corridor, are pictured milking their yaks. "Conflict" includes the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, Palestinian Protesters burning tyres on the West Bank, and on a different continent a patrol of heavily armed rangers in the Congo, with the task of protecting some of the world's last mountain gorillas and forest elephants against the poachers who do not hesitate to kill humans as well as wildlife. "Heritage" features the Golden Temple of Amritsar by night and an atmospheric night-time street scene in Durbar Square, Kathmandu, home to ancient temples and ornate doorways. Illustrating "Community", a group of San children in Botswana are pictured with a large egg they have foraged, representing an almost extinguished hunter-gatherer way of life on the edge of the Kalahari desert. Walking the length of the Nile, the author finds the Nubians among the most hospitable people in the world. 224pp, colour photos on every double spread.

EVERYONE'S A CRITIC: The Ultimate Cartoon Book

Book number: 92394 Product format: Hardback Author: EDITED BY BOB ECKSTEIN

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00
Published price £14.99

Celebrating our brave new world where everything you do is researched on social media or websites like TripAdvisor, and where even your companion on a night out has been filtered through hours spent on dating apps, this collection of over 130 cartoons reflects the fact that nowadays "everyone's a critic". In a prestigious concert hall a man confides to his companion, "I heard this entire symphony yesterday while on hold", while a bagpiper arriving at the gates of hell is told by Satan "you'll be in charge of the music down here", to the sound of earsplitting wails from the inmates. Restaurants get their fair share of hilarious attention in this collection, starting with the front cover cartoon showing a dog dining in a restaurant and anxiously asking the waiter, "Is the homework fresh?" At another establishment a diner asks the waiter, "Would you say the tuna salad kicks ass?" Meanwhile, in the kitchen, a harassed restaurateur instructs the chef: "There's a restaurant critic out there. Thaw out a meal from that place they all like." Couples are a perennial source of amusement, for instance leaving the cinema: "But what I didn't sleep through, I liked"; or the ultimate put-down when arriving at a party: "Just don't be yourself". In other laughs, a woman in a supermarket wails: "I've only got seven ?likes' for what I've put in my trolley", and a Torturer addresses a man on the rack: "And finally, may I ask how satisfied you were with the way I handled your interrogation today?" There are hours of enjoyment in these wry reflections. 144pp, over 130 cartoons, biographies.

KITTENHOOD: Life-Size Portraits of Kittens

Book number: 92398 Product format: Hardback Author: SARAH BETH ERNHART

In stock

Bibliophile price £9.50
Published price $50

This gorgeous volume does exactly what it says on the cover: gives us portraits of kittens from 25 different breeds, both pure and mixed, reproduced on large pages at life size, some with their friends and siblings. A three-week kitten is just beginning to explore the world, and at six weeks is learning how to play. Older kittens, between nine and 12 weeks, are at their most entertaining - rambunctious, athletic, all over the place, and in some cases changing their eye colour and fur colour. Snow White and Gretel are lovely white examples of Cornish Rex, with their huge mesmeric eyes, while Waylon and Oreo, both Tuxedo Mix with their distinctive black and white markings, are photographed at 8 and 9 weeks and are obviously enjoying an audience. Joey is an 11 week old Birman with long silky white fur, weighing 3 lbs, and looking proportionally more like an adult cat than some of the others. True Blue is a 12-week old Oriental with a pointed face, magnificent ears and very short brown fur, while Mabel, a 9-week old Sphynx, has no fur and the highly prized pedigree wrinkled skin. Tonkinese Cosmo is utterly gorgeous at 6 weeks, squeezing his eyes shut at first and then coming out to play with his mate Joe, both of them adorable. Bella is an Exotic Longhair, with thick unruly brown fur at 9 weeks and a squashed-looking face which adds to the pugnacious air. Johnny and June are Black Mix kittens, thin in the body with a prowling walk, in total contrast to tiny Tillie, a 6-week-old Napoleon weighing only three quarters of a pound, but very furry and with an expression of cute appeal. Sonnet is a lovely Siamese with huge ears and those arresting blue eyes, at 7 weeks weighing in at almost 2 lbs. Four 4-week old Siamese kittens, Twist, Cachet, Rhyme and Melody, are pictured playing together in a tangle of legs, ears and tails. 120 VERY LARGE pages 33 x 28cm, life-size photos. A total delight for a cat lover.
