WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Book number: 23773 Product format: Paperback Author: EMILY BRONTE

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00

A wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature. Introduction and Notes by John S. Whitley, University of Sussex. 248 page paperback.

DUBLINERS

Book number: 100422 Product format: Paperback Author: JAMES JOYCE

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00

Living overseas but writing, always, about his native city, Joyce made Dublin unforgettable. The stories in Dubliners show us truants, seducers, gossips, rally-drivers, generous hostesses, corrupt politicians, failing priests, amateur theologians, struggling musicians, moony adolescents, victims of domestic brutishness, sentimental aunts and poets, patriots earnest or cynical, and people striving to get by. In every sense an international figure, Joyce was faithful to his own country by seeing it unflinchingly and challenging every precedent and piety in Irish literature. Bibliophile price £4.00

Jules Verne's third great science fiction novel describes the discovery and exploration of a secret tunnel which leads through a volcano to the centre of the Earth. The leader of the expedition is an archetypal comic and eccentric boffin, and together with his ward, his nephew Axel (who is in love with the ward), and an estimable Icelandic guide, the journey is made. 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' achieved instant and enduring popularity on publication in 1874. Together with 'Around the World in Eighty Days', 'Five Weeks in a Balloon' and 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea', it established Verne as an author of high adventure who filled his stories with a wealth of technical detail, and the energy and freshness of an extraordinary inventive imagination. 192pp. Paperback.

ESSENTIAL PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS

Book number: 65536 Product format: Paperback Author: DAVID HUME

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00

David Hume (1711-1776) was the most important philosopher ever to write in English, as well as a master stylist. This volume contains his major philosophical works. A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-1740), published while Hume was still in his 20s, consists of three books on the understanding, the passions, and morals. It applies the experimental method of reasoning to human nature in a revolution that was intended to make Hume the Newton of the moral sciences. Disappointed with the Treatise's failure to bring about such a revolution, Hume later recast Book I as An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1751), and Book III as An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, which he regarded as 'incomparably the best' of all his works. Both Enquiries went through several editions in his lifetime. Hume's works, controversial in his day, remain deeply and widely influential in ours, especially for his contributions to our understanding of the nature of morality, political and economic theory, philosophy of religion, and philosophical naturalism. This volume also includes Hume’s anonymous Abstract of Books I and II of the Treatise, and the short autobiographical essay, ‘My Own Life’, which he wrote just before his death. 860 page paperback. Bibliophile price £5.00

Utopia is a complex, innovative and penetrating contribution to political thought. Utopians live according to the principles of natural law, but are receptive to Christian teachings, hold all possessions in common, and view gold as worthless. Drawing on the ideas of Plato, St. Augustine and Aristotle, Utopia was practiced by Bacon, H.G. Wells, Huxley and George Orwell. It invites readers to become participants in a compelling debate concerning the best state of a commonwealth. 134pp in Wordsworth reprinted paperback. With Utopian alphabet and glossary.
