DOG GUARDIAN

Book number: 93702 Product format: Paperback Author: NIGEL REED

In stock

Bibliophile price £5.00
Published price £10.99

'Your Guide to a Happy, Well-Behaved Dog' is the sub-title of a book by a man who has worked with hundreds of clients and their dogs all over Britain and Europe covering a wide spectrum of behaviours from many breeds and difficult situations with varied attitudes from the owners. You will be amazed at how simple and effective Nigel's methods are and every dog owner will want to reach a greater understanding with their dog. Every dog desperately wants to be understood by their human family so that they are able to relax and enjoy their life. Dogs which exhibit a wide range of behavioural problems from pulling on the lead and not listening when called to aggression and nervousness put the human dog relationship under strain. The book is a narrative that reveals the key principals to securing your dog's wellbeing. One side relies on stimulus response training and the other school of thought believes that an understanding of wolf behaviour is critical to understanding a dog's motivation. Once your dog can assess your reactions and trust your decisions, it is reassured about the world around it and your dog's confidence will grow in every situation. We look at techniques to reduce your dog's state of anxiety if it does arise, to reinforce your position as an effective decision maker, and teach your dog self control. This means we need to examine leadership style, management of situations and mindset. The book covers training models, language, issues with food, perceived dangers, dogs that do not get on with each other, attention-seeking behaviours, rough play, separation anxiety, the walk on lead and off lead, obsessive behaviours, toilet issues, children and puppies and managing other people. Packed with new and vital information no matter what age, breed or history of dog. 227pp, paperback.

Published in association with The National Gallery, we explore the world's greatest artists in 100 visually stunning puzzles. We zoom in on focal points of famous paintings by Degas like Combing the Hair, match the missing grid, find the twins, work out which is a fake or fortune. Many jigsaws have missing pieces where two small squares have been removed from a painting and five duplicates made of each of them. Can you identify which is correct? Discover little known facts about masterpieces like Canaletto's Venice: The Grand Canal and the quality and level of light in Rembrandt's Self Portrait at the age of 34 and the graceful postures of the figures in Piero della Francesca's The Baptism of Christ and the glowing skin with pallor perfection and blushing pink at points of Velázquez's naked woman in The Toilet of Venus. There are quizzes by century, several versions of artworks, but are they by the same artist? Answer which artworks founded or is the exemplar of a new artistic school, which artworks show an imaginary location or a fictitious one, which artworks are considered worthless and which artworks were previously owned by another well known artist, which are by women or created by a high-ranking aristocrat and which artworks show a location that still looks the same today? Constable's The Hay Wain or Millet's The Church at Arbonne? Mythic, cryptic, obscure, with answers at the back, a very glamorous 240 page large paperback, hundreds of colour illus.

BRONZE AGE IN EUROPE

Book number: 93720 Product format: Paperback Author: JEAN-PIERRE MOHEN ET AL

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.25
Published price £7.95

The archaeologist author together with Christiane Eluère takes us back beyond the borders of history. Achilles, Odysseus and other heroes of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey fought with shields and swords of bronze. What was the world like in those mythic days when the rival Greek cities of Troy and Mycenae battled for supremacy, and far to the West unknown engineers raised the megaliths of Stonehenge? We read about Achilles, armed for battle raging at the Trojans. 'First he placed along his legs the fair greaves linked with silver fastenings to hold the greaves at the ankles. Afterward he girt about his chest the corselet, and across his shoulders slung the sword with the nails of silver, a bronze sword, and caught up in the great shield, huge and heavy nets, and from it the light glimmered far, as far from the Moon... Next he pulled out from its standing place the spear of his father...' But what do we know of even earlier times when the settled peoples of Europe first replaced their crude stone tools with those made of refined metal, and crafted ornaments of beaten copper and gold? Chapters cover The Metallurgical Centres like the Gold of Varna in Bulgaria with 2,200 ornaments dating from as early as the 5th millennium, The Chalcolithic Period in the Iberian Peninsula which was the result of Eastern influences. Bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) appeared between 3000 and 1500BC in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Northern Europe. Pictured are remains and art in Crete, vessels, arms and armour, cultural centres, mother goddesses and horned figures, chariots, wheels and birds depicted in small Sardinian bronzes; the Mycenaean religion, funeral rites and an appendix on documents, with illustrations including the remarkable remains of Otzi, the ancient man, as preserved today. 160pp, paperback packed with colour illus. and glossy pages in this Thames & Hudson publication.
